The face of crime and criminal investigation is changing. Now, every street detective must at least understand the basics of cyber crime in order to be effective. Extremist groups and street gangs both use the Internet to communicate and recruit new members. Every police department is inundated with complaints involving online auction fraud. Internet-facilitated identity theft is committed by criminals ranging from drug addicts to organized international crime groups. This one day (8 hour) course is designed specifically for the active detective, law enforcement officer and investigator. The material is presented in a clear and understandable manner by a working detective that has used the internet to help solve investigations ranging from murder to complex embezzlement. The presenter uses humor and case examples to keep the material interesting and relevant. Students with any level of familiarity with the Internet and computers will find this course beneficial. By the end of the course, students will: · Be able to identify the numerous devices that can store digital information. · Understand how to search for, and safely seize digital storage media, computer storage devices, and mobile communication devices (i.e. smart phone and PDAs) · Have an understanding of what information a forensic computer examination can provide to help further an investigation. · See how to integrate evidence recovered from the Internet and digital storage media with other low-tech information. · Be able to find out who owns a Website and who sent an email. · Know how and where to send data preservation requests and serve legal process on an Internet Service Provider. · Have the tools to thoroughly interview suspects, victims, and witnesses when the crime involves computers or online activity. · Learn how to obtain free open-source information on suspects and intelligence targets using the internet. · See how money laundering works. · Walk through the steps on an online identity theft and auction fraud in real time during the course. · Be able to serve as a resource for other officers and explain to community groups how to safely use the internet. Attendees receive course material, including legal process contact information, preservation letters, boilerplate compliance documents, and resource guides.
